World champion boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez isn’t giving much thought to the upcoming scheduling conflict with the UFC next month.
Canelo, 34, is due to defend his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against the 22-0 American Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena next month in an event to coincide with Mexican Independence Day. The thing is, though, just down the road at the recently-opened Sphere, the UFC is also holding a Mexican-themed event and despite the conflict potentially diluting the interest in one or both of those fight cards, Canelo says that he isn’t overly-concerned by the proximity of the two combat sports events.
“It’s just different,” Canelo said as to whether UFC 306 might siphon off some interest in his fight with Berlanga, via Boxing247. “Maybe other boxing matches, maybe, but Canelo is different. There are other kind of fights, but Canelo is just different.”
He added: “I don’t care if the UFC is there, when Canelo fights, it’s different. Look, at some point all the fighters did [what they were told]. Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Julio Cesar Chavez, Mike Tyson, everybody did this. There are stars and superstars and they made the championship, not the championship made them.
“So it’s way different. I come and I do my career and I fight [Miguel] Cotto with a clause, and I fight with Mayweather with a clause, and I fight everybody to build the Canelo I am now. Right now I can do whatever I want.”
The UFC 306 card, dubbed ‘Riyadh Season Noche UFC’ owing to its partnership with Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, is to be headlined by a bantamweight world title clash between champion Sean O’Malley and top contender Merab Dvalishvili, while women’s flyweight champion, Mexico’s Alexa Grasso, will defend her crown against all-time great Valentina Shevchenko.
Dana White has claimed that the Noche UFC card, which he said has operational costs in excess of $17 million, will be “one of the greatest sporting events of all time.”
