Australia’s Jack Della Maddalena is the new breed of UFC welterweight.
Much like fellow 170-pounder Ian Machado Garry, the 27-year-old welterweight has made a big impression in his six fights on the main UFC roster to date — winning each of them to announce himself as a serious contender to fight for a championship in the coming 12-24 months.
The next, and perhaps sternest test on Della Maddalena’s run comes at next week’s UFC 299 in Miami where he takes on Florida resident Gilbert Burns. The Brazilian submission expert and previous world title challenger is known for provided a gut-check to some of the division’s rising stars, as was seen a couple of years ago when he gave Khamzat Chimaev by far the toughest fight of his career.
But should Della Maddalena pass the test, and particularly if he does so with flying colours, the softly-spoken Aussie could find himself several rungs higher on the welterweight rankings ladder in a couple of weeks’ time.
And if you want to remind yourself of the type of power that Della Maddalena possesses in his fists look no further than his first-round finish of Ramazan Emeev, which you can watch in full below.
