According to reports from Russia, next month’s ‘Fight Island’ bout between welterweights Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev is off…again.
In what is the latest slice of bad luck for England’s Edwards — who hasn’t competed inside the UFC cage since a July 2019 win against Rafael Dos Anjos, remember — the January 20 main event fight looks to have hit the scrapheap and comes after Edwards was forced out of high profile fights with the likes of Tyron Woodley and Kamaru Usman last year.
The pair were initially scheduled to meet on December 19 but Edwards was forced to pull out after he announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus. Chimaev also tested positive for the virus shortly before.
Per reports, the issue this time around centres around Chimaev and as the UFC have yet to officially confirm the news of the fight’s cancellation, it remains unclear as of now if they intend to source a new opponent for Edwards or delay the bout until further notice.
Elsewhere on the January 20 card, Michael Chiesa is set to fight welterweight veteran Neil Magny while UFC stalwarts Matt Brown and Carlos Condit are also set to clash.
