Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin have agreed to meet in the ring this year for what will be their third fight.

The two men, according to a report by Lance Pugmire of The Athletic, have verbally agreed to financial terms that will see them once again step through the ropes to settle their rivalry.

The pair have met twice before, with the first outing being an incredibly controversial draw, while Alvarez won the second by majority decision. It’s believed their trilogy fight has a target date of September 12.

The news also puts Alvarez’ next bout, a supposed clash with England’s Billy Joe Saunders, into doubt. Alvarez and Saunders were supposed to meet on May 2, but that contest was postponed after the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the global uncertainty as to when crowds can once again gather, it’s possible Alvarez will skip past that Saunders contest straight into his rematch with Triple G.

It’s a contest that’s long been in the making, but with Alvarez apparently having previously been disinterested in giving Golovkin a third opportunity to defeat him, had many fans concerned they’d never see it again.

After negotiations with DAZN that saw him earn a bit more money to agree to terms, however, Alvarez is now on board.
