Katie Taylor’s quest for greatness continues in earnest after the undisputed lightweight champion of the world has finally secured a long-awaited fight with the 38-1-1 Puerto Rican seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano.
It is a fight that the Wicklow native has been chasing for some time and will come against a fellow pound-for-pound great in the women’s boxing ranks in fight which will likely determine who among them is the best boxer of their generation.
The bout is set for May 2 and will take place on the undercard of the Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin fight in the Manchester Arena.

This is a fight that fans of the sport have been calling for for several years. Taylor, owner of one of the most outstanding amateur records in recent boxing history, last fought in November where she outpointed Christine Linardatou through ten rounds, also in the Manchester Arena. Prior to that, the Irishwoman bested the tough-as-nails Delphine Persoon to add the WBC, The Ring and lineal titles to her already overflowing trophy cabinent.
Serrano, meanwhile, hasn’t tasted defeat since 2012 and has amassed several world titles during her eleven years in the professional game — and has now set her sights on the lightweight titles in Taylor’s collection.
The bout will be a personal one for Serrano too, as Taylor already holds a victory over Serrano’s sister Cindy, who was beaten by Taylor by unanimous decision in October 2018.
