Dana White believes his International Fight Week main event is already booked.
The UFC president says Jorge Masvidal will face welterweight champion Kamaru Usman for the UFC gold on the company’s annual tentpole event. The announcement comes just days after Usman and Masvidal got into an altercation during media duties in Miami ahead of this Sunday’s Super Bowl.
“So we’re going to bring him to Vegas,” White said, speaking to Jim Rome. “Him and Usman are going to fight in Vegas, probably international fight week, and then if [Masvidal] wins, maybe we have his first title defence down here in Miami.
“That was always the plan [to have them fight in July], and then whatever happened with them a couple of days ago.. we hadn’t announced it yet, but now this has forced me to announce it.”
Masvidal has been on a huge career resurgence since the beginning of last year, and is currently one of the biggest stars in the sport. He’ll be coming into the Usman contest off the back of wins over Nate Diaz, Ben Askren and Darren Till.
For Usman, the Masvidal fight will be his second title defence as champion, having just defeated Colby Covington in a five-round epic last month.
International Fight Week traditionally takes place the first week of July.
