The main event has been set for the UFC’s return to Canada next February.
Perennially top ranked heavyweights will square off in the main event, when former champion Junior Dos Santos meets Dutchman Stefan Struve on February 19th next at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The two previously met all the way back at UFC 95 in 2009 with Dos Santos picking up the win via TKO inside the first minute.
Dos Santos comes into the bout on the back of an impressive (and decisive) decision victory against the in-form Ben Rothwell last April, a fight which considerably re-established the 32-year-old Brazilian’s title credentials in the heavyweight fold. Formerly a ruler of the division, Dos Santos has run hot and cold over his last few bouts. Despite wins over Rothwell, current champ Stipe Miocic and Mark Hunt, JDS has dropped bouts to Alistair Overeem and twice to Cain Velasquez over the course of his last six dates in the Octagon but a win here — especially considering he already holds a win over Miocic — would place Dos Santos firmly back in the title hunt at heavyweight.
Stefan Struve, meanwhile, has had his hand raised in three of his last four outings in the UFC. ‘Skyscraper’ has rebounded from some health issues to notch up wins against Daniel Omielanczuk, Antonio Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuira, with a decision loss to Jared Rosholt in between and it seems to many as if seven foot tall kickboxer is finally starting to deliver on his undeniable potential in the UFC.
Elsewhere on the Halifax card, middleweights Elias Theodorou and Cesar Ferreira will meet and the UFC has also confirmed bouts between Thiago Santos and Jack Marshman, as well as Alessandro Ricci and Alvaro Herrera.
UFC Halifax will take place on February 19th.
