After an emphatic victory in London last week, Gunnar Nelson is ready for a step up in competition.

And after a suggestion from Coach John Kavanagh, Nelson believes that former UFC welterweight title contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson fits the bill nicely.

“It’s an exciting fight, I guess it’s a fight people would wanna see, two karate guys going at it,” Nelson said, speaking on The Luke Thomas Show. “We have karate, both of us, but we have very different styles. That’s my opinion anyway, from looking at him fighting and knowing my style. It is very different.

“I’d be very interested in that match, you know.”

Nelson, a long time friend and training partner of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, also went into detail about what it is that makes the Irishman so dangerous.

“He’s got ridiculous power in his left hand,” Nelson said. “He’s got amazing power in his left hand, but what’s more important and what he’s better at is precision and timing with his left hand. He can throw it from all different situations, from where he’s backing off, where he’s coming in, where he’s kind of angled off and in the combination and he just sets it up with all these different aspects.

“It’s just a very, very dangerous weapon and if you haven’t seen it before, you haven’t sparred with him or fought him, it’s definitely going to give you hell. It’s done that to all his opponents.”
